According to Durga Puja Calendar, on the sixth day of Shardiya Navaratri the Divine Mother arrives to the mortal world from her heavenly abode accompanied by her children. This is the eve of the Puja, unveiling the face of the idol is the main ritual of this day. Kalpa arambho, the ritual performed before the commencement of the puja precedes Bodhon. 

महाषष्ठी : अश्विन माह में देवी पक्ष का छठवां दिन
दुर्गा पूजा की औपचारिक शुरुआत, महाषष्ठी की चार प्रमुख धार्मिक क्रियाएं हैं :
1. कल्पारंभ: विधिविधान पूर्वक पूजा की शुरुआत।
2. बोधन: देवी का विधि पूर्वक अभिषेक।
3. आमंत्रण: माता का विधि पूर्वक पृथ्वी लोक पर अवतरण।
4. अधिवास: पूजा पंडाल में माँ दुर्गा के वास स्थल का शुद्धिकरण।
